Build core strength, stability and control to support your movement, improve performance and help you handle the physical demands of training.

Follow the guide below to get the most from the exercise and to avoid injury:

Step 1:
Start with your back on the floor and your legs bent with your feet flat on the ground.

Step 2:
Lift your upper back upwards, keeping your feet flat before lowering back down.

Steps for performing a crunch

Following the below guide will ensure that you carry out this exercise correctly, getting the most from it and without incurring injury.

Step 1:
Lay, back down, on the floor with your head and shoulders raised looking between your legs. Knees should be bent with the soles of the feet flat on the floor.

Step 2:
Alternate touching each ankle with your hands by moving from side to side keeping your head and shoulders raised off the floor.

Steps for performing a heel taps

Follow the below guide to ensure that you complete the movement correctly and without injury:

Step 1:

Start by lying flat on the floor with your feet together and your arms by your sides.

Step 2:
Pull yourself up and pull your knees to your chest at the same time. Arms should move down your sides until they reach almost to your ankles. Lower back down to lying position and repeat.

Step 1:
Lie on your back with your knees slightly bent. Keep the soles of your feet flat on the floor and lightly touch your temples with your hand.

Step 2:
Lift up your torso and bend to the right until your left elbow touches your right knee. Return to your starting position in a controlled fashion.

Step 3:
Repeat the movement on the opposite side and continue, maximising each repetition.

Steps for performing a sit-up twist

To prepare properly for your fitness tests, and to get ready for Basic Training, it’s important you master the correct techniques for key exercises. To do a Royal Navy sit-up, you need to:

Step 1:
Lie on your back with your knees slightly bent. Keep the soles of your feet flat on the floor and lightly touch your temples with your hand.

Step 2:
Lift up your torso until your elbows touch your knees.

Step 3:
Return to your starting position in a controlled fashion, maximising each repetition.

Physical instructor sit-up technique

To prepare properly for your fitness tests, and to get ready for Basic Training, it’s important you master the correct techniques for key exercises. To do a Royal Navy trunk curl you need to:

Step 1:
Lie on your back with your knees bent and the soles of your feet flat on the floor. Place your hands on your thighs.

Step 2:
Lift your shoulders and upper back off the ground until your fingers reach your knees. Keep your head straight and stay looking forward at all times. Maximise each repetition by returning slowly to your starting position.

Follow the below guide to ensure that you complete the movement correctly and without injury:

Step 1:
Start with your lower back on the floor, your head and upper back raised and your legs raised into the air. Place your hands on your knees.

Step 2:
Push your lower back up and extend your hands up your ankles. Repeat for one minute. Keep your abs engaged as you perform this move.
