Role

No 3 Flying Training School (3FTS) lays the foundation for the Royal Navy’s highly-trained jet pilots. This is where students learn the basic flying techniques that will prepare them for their next phase of training.

Elementary Flying Training is about more than just take-off and landing. Most potential pilots arriving at 3FTS will have only flown around 35 hours. Within around 20 flying hours, students at 3FTS can navigate their aircraft at more than 200mph just 150m above the ground, fly in cloud, and deal with a host of simulated emergency situations.

Teaching takes place in the air and on the ground, led by experienced Flying Instructors who work to get the most from students. Instructors will assess their suitability for the rigours of the front line and the piloting of the cutting-edge F-35 Lightning II that delivers the UK’s carrier strike capability.
