43 Commando

43 Commando Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines is a 460-strong operational unit based at HM Naval Base Clyde on the west coast of Scotland.

Role

43 Commando provides specialist personnel and teams who assist in securing the UK’s strategic nuclear deterrent. The unit works closely with partners from the Royal Navy, the MOD Police and the Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO).

43 Commando is part of the UK Commando Forces (UKCF), with a 1* Commander in RMB Stonehouse, Plymouth. UKCF provide VHR forces to Defence for global deployments in multiple disciplines.

Capability

43 Commando is the Royal Navy’s and the Commando Forces’ close combat specialist unit. Training alongside MOD Police, the Nuclear Transport Operations Group, the US Marine Corps and the US Coast Guard it maintains the highest standards of precision and lethality through the constant vigilance of its operational squadrons.

With a deployable boat group and state of the art close quarter training facilities 43 Commando ensures the security of Defence nuclear assets in any urban or maritime environment. 

Workforce

43 Commando is made up of Royal Marines, Royal Navy and Civil Service personnel split across 4 squadrons: a combined Command and Logistics Squadron and O, P and R Squadrons.

O and P Squadrons specialise in waterfront nuclear security in HMNB Clyde and, when required, elsewhere, R Squadron’s focus is on mobile nuclear security on land and at sea throughout the UK. Skills include:

  • Close quarter marksmanship and close quarter combat;
  • Team Medic;
  • night operations;
  • operating in industrial and subterranean environments;
  • and small craft handling.
