Aim

The aim of the course is to provide basic theory and practical experience in Navigation, Seamanship, and Leadership, in order to better prepare International Junior Officers, for a first complement role as Second Officer of the Watch (OOW) and OOW. It also provides a basis for further International training including the ILT and Navigation Courses.

  • Leadership including when requires a fitness test

  • Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS)

Requirements

  • To have completed the Initial Naval Training (Officer) (INT(O) or National equivalent
  • Eyesight standards are detailed at the front of the chapter
  • Ability to pass appropriate fitness standard
  • Note: Where IELTS is at 5.5 it may be possible to arrange further assessment
    in order to meet the course requirements

Qualifications gained

  • GMDSS ‘VHF Short Range’ certificate (will require own nation’s endorsement)
  • First Aid certificate

Post course recommendations

Further sea experiences in own navy to obtain Bridge Watch-keeping and Ocean Navigation certificates to STCW standars.
