Aim

To prepare officers for appointment as a Navigating Officer in a Corvette, MCMV or offshore Patrol Vessel.

  • Navigation aids, GPS/Echo Sounders/Logs/Gyros
  • International Regulation for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea (IRPCS)
  • Warship Electronic Chart Display & Information System (WECDIS)
  • Tides and Time
  • Chartwork
  • Practical instruction and assessment in the RN Full Mission Bridge Simulator
    conducting visual pilotage by day and night.
  • When available practical instruction and assessment in a RN OPV/MM
    conducting visual and blind pilotage by day and night working closely with the
    Ships Commanding Officer, Navigator, Officer of the Watch and Bridge Team.

Requirements

  • Senior Sub-Lieutenant or junior Lieutenant with the equivalent of the RN’s Bridge Watch-Keeping certificate with at least 2 years seagoing experience and 1000 hours of certified seagoing Bridge watchkeeping experience
  • Eyesight standards are detailed at the front of the chapter
  • Note: Where IELTS is at 5.5 it may be possible to arrange further assessment in order to meet the course

Qualifications gained

Continuous assessment and final examination to RN standards in:

  • Rule of the Road
  • Tides and time
  • Chartwork and fixing
  • General navigation and ship handling (Simulator)
  • General navigation and ship handling (Sea)

Successful students will be awarded with a Pass, Pass with Merit, or Pass with Distinction.
