Aim

An intermediate course designed to build-on the Navigation and Warfare skill set of Junior Warfare Officers with some previous experience at sea and which will provide a basis for more specialised navigation and/or warfare training.

  • International Maritime Law and ROE
  • Ops room simulator, practical exercises in Maritime Security Operations and Scenarios
  • Close Range theory and drills

Navigation Modules:

  • Rule of the Road
  • Tides and Time Zones
  • Communications Management Module to include:
  1. Tactical Communications
  2. Stationing
  3. Forming & Screening
  4. RAS & Fleetwork consolidation
  • Charts
  • Chartwork
  • Coastal Navigation
  • Pilotage
  • Electronic Chart Display & Information System (ECDIS) Bridge Simulator
  • Practical Navigation in Bridge Simulator, and (when available) at sea, conduction Ship Handling, Coastal Passage and basic Pilotage

Requirements

  • To have completed the RN Initial Naval Training (Officer), or National equivalent, including ISL
  • Candidates ideally should have 500 hours of certified seagoing Bridge Watchkeeping experience
  • Eyesight standards are detailed at the front of the chapter

Qualifications gained

Practical assessment in Coastal Navigation and Basic Pilotage conducted in a suitable vessel (when available) plus continuous assessment and final examination to RN standard in:

  • Relative Velocity
  • MSO
  • Communications including SRC
  • Bridge Simulator
  • Rule of the Road
  • Sea Phase when available
  • General Navigation Exam

Successful students will be awarded with a Pass, Pass with Merit, or Pass with Distinction. GMDSS ‘VHF Short Range’ certificate (will require own nation’s endorsement).
