Aims

The Royal Marines Corporal Leadership Development Course (CLDC) provides the necessary training required to allow pre-promotion Corporal aspirants to gain the correct leadership knowledge, skills, and attributes to undertake their role as a Corporal within the Royal Marines. This is done through a mixture of theoretical and practical training with a combination of formative and summative assessments. Unless downgraded or otherwise stipulated students must complete all serials of the course program to pass this course.

Course Details

  • Military Knowledge. Students will learn the initial stages of the discipline process and how to apply them
  • Management and Administration. Students will produce a basic Military Training Programme
  • Communication Skills. Students will deliver a presentation on influential Leaders, not necessarily Military
  • Navigation. Students are assessed on their individual ability to navigate over arduous terrain in all weather conditions. Students must pass 2 from 3 of the summative assessments to pass this module. Students must also pass 2 from 3 Static Map Reading stances. These assess the student’s ability to observe and read topographical information and apply this to the ground in front
  • Command & Leadership. Students will be formatively assessed throughout the course on their ability to lead and command, the predominant assessment being the final exercise however command and leadership will be monitored informally throughout
  • RM Values & Standards. Students will be assessed throughout the course on their personal approach to leadership, including their application of the RM Values. Individual students Values and Standard will be reviewed on an individual basis by the course instructors and where appropriate they can provide a recommendation to CW CO about removing a student from course given adequate evidence is provided. CO CW reserves the right to remove a student from course with sufficient evidence
  • Physical assessments (Physical Leadership Risk Mitigation). The Physical assessments not only identify whether students are physically able to conduct the training but also whether they have the mental fortitude and capacity in reserve to support and lead others (particularly in preparation for the TCC). Students must pass 2 from 3 of the summative assessments to pass this module and be deemed as ‘safe’ to continue the course prior to exercising on Local Training Areas (LTA). Students will conduct a stretcher race over the Endurance Course and local area during week 4 of the course. This is a team/ syndicate event where the attributes of a leader are observed throughout
  • Leadership and Ethics. Students will be involved in group discussions and debate using generate case studies and experiences

Requirements

  • Age: No minimum age. Must adhere to entry standards
  • Rank: OR4
  • Students must have been selected for promotion to Corporal and be in date for the respective Royal Marines Fitness Test (RMFT). All students must complete the JPA competencies identified in the Joining Instructions. All students must be individually highly motivated in all respects
