Aims

To train and teach the student intermediate skills in conducting and rehearsal techniques, scoring and composition, supported with professionally relevant academic subjects in music.

Course Details

  • Conducting, score preparation and rehearsal techniques (directing professional relevant ensembles including wind band and ceremonial parade band
  • Elements of music (music theory)
  • Harmony and compositional techniques. Harmony includes modulation, secondary seventh chords and jazz notation
  • Composition, scoring and arranging (for professionally relevant ensembles)
  • Aural perception, including melodic and rhythmic dictation, identification of music from different styles and periods.
  • Music history and analysis, covering music from the Middle Ages to the present day
  • Viva voce: oral discussion covering all aspects of the course
  • Broad understanding of all common instruments; including ranges, transposition, sound production, construction, repertoire, notable players and historical information
  • Viva voce: oral discussion covering all aspects of the course and basic analysis of practical assessments

Requirements

  • Grade 5 ABRSM music theory
  • Significant experience as an instrumental performer
  • Desirable to have some conducting experience
  • Acquaintance with music notation software, such as Sibelius
  • General awareness of the 'RMBS Instrumental Handbook'

Exams and Qualifications Gained

  • Written and practical examinations take place near the end of the course
  • There is a coursework assignment: students submit an arrangement or composition
  • ABRSM grade 6 music theory
