Aim
To train junior officers to be competent in planning and carrying out field work and be able, under supervision, to undertake small detached hydrographic surveys ashore and afloat.
Course details
- Introduction to mathematics used in surveying and trigonometry, matrices, calculus, and error theory
- General theory of establishing horizontal positional control including theory on geodesy, projections and grids
- General theory of establishing vertical positional control including theory on vertical datums, tidal forces and tidal streams
- Theory and practical use of a range of survey equipment including theodolites, electro-optical distance measuring systems and global navigation satellite systems
- Theory and practical use of single and multi-beam echo sounders and towed sonar systems
- Theory and practical planning and running of hydrographic surveys
Requirements
UK GCSE mathematics (Min grade C/4) or recognised equivalent.
Exams and Qualifications Gained
- Comprehensive set a written exams, assignments and presentations.
- Assessed practical survey project, including beach reconnaissance exercise
- Recognised by FIG/IHO Advisory Board as meeting the standards for a category B course
NOTES:
Senior ratings and non-commission officers meeting the minimum entry standards and with prior hydrographic survey experience may be accepted onto the course with agreement of the lead instructor.
