What you can do

Profession details

Joining the Royal Navy as a Healthcare and Medical Rating (Qualified) means you’ll get the chance to practice in the most dynamic environments. You’ll push your clinical skills, take advantage of training opportunities, and contribute significantly to the overall care and treatment of our personnel. In addition to this, Healthcare and Medical Ratings (Qualified) are qualified as Adult Nurses, Mental Health Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners, Radiographers, Biomedical Scientists, Dental Nurses and Dental Hygienists.  Whatever you do, you’ll be providing crucial clinical care.

  • Develop and maintain your clinical competencies and skills
  • Work within a Joint Hospital Group Unit and be deployed all over the world when needed
  • Take on leadership and management responsibilities as your career progresses
  • Tailor your career to your ambitions with specialist courses

Qualifications you'll gain

  • Opportunity to gain level 6 - 7 Degree qualifications in healthcare fields

Skills you'll develop

  • Learn to be adaptable, flexible and disciplined
  • You must be aged 20 to 39 (You can start your application from 15 years and 9 months old however you must be at least 20 years old on day of entry to basic training)  
  • Medical or Healthcare degree or diploma
  • Health and Care Professions Council Membership
  • A National of the United Kingdom, a Commonwealth citizen or Dual National
  • Minimum height of 145cm
  • A Body Mass Index (BMI) between 18 and 28
